Our packing volunteers assemble the 10 lb bags with mixed veggies and ensure each one is weighed.

Feeding Communities Supporting Local Farmers Keeping Waste From Landfills

Since 2018, St. Luke’s has regularly bundled and sold veggies, called “seconds”, to our community through a partnership with Square Roots.

Square Roots is a social enterprise program created and run by business students at Enactus St. Mary’s University in Halifax. Their aim is to help combat food insecurity by supporting local farmers, keeping waste from landfills, and feeding our communities. They arrange deliveries and bundle sales across HRM and at community locations across the province.

Seconds Veggies

These vegetables are Nova Scotia grown and considered seconds by grocery stores because they are usually too small, too big or oddly shaped; however, they are still delicious to eat.

These root veggies and apples are bundled by volunteers in 10 lb. bags and sold for $10 per bag or $7.50 if that is what you can afford. Square Roots also offers veggie bundles for free. Contact us for more information.

Through BayRides, St. Margaret’s Bay Food Bank clients can even have veggie bundles delivered.
